At the end of the fossil era, rebuilding the global economy and society according to criteria of sustainability is a difficult task.
For this fundamental transformation, complex and interwoven aspects have to be taken into account, e.g. dwindling natural resources, land use conflicts caused by reinforced mobility of humans, goods, and resources, or current processes of denationalization, increasing societal segregation and polarization of social spaces. These aspects are all manifested in the concrete physical space as well as in socio-culturally and socio-economically shaped structures in the space.
In order to cope with the challenges linked to the transformation, new knowledge about the emergence of problems, adequate approaches for their solution, and ways to put these solutions into practice is required. Finding integrated solutions is necessary, in which technical, social, natural and planning sciences are equally involved.
The research center TRUST - Transdisciplinary Rural and Urban Spatial Transformation is dedicated to the study of spatial transformation in the context of these Grand Callenges.
