2nd TRUST-Lecture: Dr. Fatima Denton (UNU-INRA, Accra): “More than just fuel - stranded assets and equity in the context of a just energy transition?”

The second TRUST Lecture was delivered by Dr. Fatima Denton, the Director of the United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA). Dr. Denton focused in her talk on the important topic of stranded assets and equity and gave many examples from the African context. She explained that these are assets such as oil, coal or gas which can no longer be monetized due to changes in political and regulatory frameworks, or societal or environmental conditions, and that climate change has been one of the major driver of asset stranding.  A fruitful discussion evolved around the need to diversify economies, the role of renewable energy, the role of multinational companies, as well as climate finance for Africa.

This TRUST lecture was organized this summer term in cooperation with the research focus group on Sustainable Globalization from the Faculty of Economics and Management.
